Setup syslog to accept remote connections

If you want to setup a syslog server to accept messages from remote devices you have to make some changes to the default syslog configuration.

Syslog will not listen for remote messages unless the SYSLOGD_OPTIONS variable in /etc/sysconfig/syslog has a -r included in it as shown below.

SYSLOGD_OPTIONS="-m 0 -r"

Restart syslog;
service syslog restart

Verify that syslog is listening on UDP;
netstat -a | grep syslog

udp 0 0 *:syslog *:*
